What I Read This Week…

Monkey and the Little One by Claire Alexander is a sweet picture book about friendship.  Monkey likes to eat bananas, read books, and swim in the lake, but he also likes to be quiet.  When Little One tries to befriend him he just wants to be alone.  Soon he realizes that things are just not the same without Little One and goes in search of her.  This would make a great read aloud in a kindergarten or first grade classroom.

The Secret Life of Squirrels by Nancy Rose a picture book for younger readers that will appeal to animal lovers.  Students will especially enjoy the amusing and clever photographs.  The squirrel at the center of the story, Mr. Peanuts, is photographed engaging in human activities such as cooking on a grill, reading, and playing piano.  Mr. Peanuts invites his cousin for a visit and the book ends with a message about how much more fun it is to have a friend.

Reading Workshop 2.0: Supporting Readers in the Digital Age by FrankSerafini is the professional text I’m currently reading.  Dr. Serafini provides a rationale for why digital reading practices should be incorporated into the reading workshop. He also provides many suggestions for tools to support students in navigating, discussing, and analyzing digital texts and provide them with opportunities to share their reading lives digitally.  So far I’ve bookmarked many pages that describe digital tools I want to explore for use with my students.

  4. The monkey book sounds interesting. We've had in the store for awhile and I hadn't read it. But now that I know it's about a book loving monkey, that changes everything!
